Are you prepared for a Coast Guard Inspection?
FLARES
When it comes to having the correct flare inventory here are some things you should know:
- All your Flares must be Coast Guard approved.
- All Flares must have an expiration date stamped on them.
- All Flares expire in 3 ½ years from date of manufacture- be sure you are buying a current lot.
- You must have at least 3 Flares which are approved for day or night use.
Examples include:
- Red Aerial Flares shot through a 12 gauge pistol
- Red Aerial Flares shot through a 25 mm pistol
- Hand held Red Signal Flares
- Red Parachute Flares
- It is recommended that you always carry Aerial and handheld Flares
- You do not have to throw your Flares out. You can use them as backup against your up to date stockpile.
- If you do choose to dispose of your Flares, it is suggested that you light them on land in a safe area or call your local police or fire department.
- Never throw Flares overboard, or in the household trash.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER
- Your Fire Extinguisher must be Coast Guard approved, Marine Grade, it must be charged, and you must have the appropriate number of fire extinguishers per length of boat.
LIFE JACKETS
- Must be Coast Guard approved, one for everyone on board. You also need a throwable device properly stowed. Children under 13 must be wearing their PFD (personal flotation device) while underway. Each PFD must have a whistle stoutly attached.
Other recommended items to have on board are a sufficient First Aid Kit to handle minor issues, an appropriately sized anchor and line plus enough line to anchor in 6 times the depth of water in which you are likely to navigate.
